Old MACC cases to be reopened include files on 'influential' figures: Latheefa

Old cold files that MACC is reopening include cases involving figures that were "very influential", its chief commissioner, Latheefa Koya, said this morning, but she declined to reveal further in fear of jeopardising the investigations.
She said disclosing such information might cause subjects of the MACC probe to "scamper" and possibly lead to the files "going missing".
According to Latheefa, there are many old files that the anti-graft body is going to re-look, a move she is taking after she kept receiving new information and evidence that suggest there were basis in certain old cases, including closed ones.
"I have received memos after memos where they told me there was no case, and I have been getting additional info and evidence. So I have to go back to those files and check back if they were properly closed or not," she told the media on the sidelines of a forum on beneficial ownership held in Kuala Lumpur this morning.

Latheefa was scheduled to give the closing remarks at the event.
"I can't name names, because the minute I tell you, guess who will be scampering.
"So, if I leak you a hint of these files, I don't know if the files would go missing," she added.
Asked whether she was suspecting any wrongdoing in previous decisions to close the files, Latheefa said she would not comment on this until she looked at the files.
She also refused to comment when asked if there was possibly a 'deep state' in MACC.
"What are you trying to get at actually? I never used that word. Please do not put that word in my mouth.
"I never used the words 'deep state'. So let's leave it like that. I already said what I said."
While refusing to give the specifics of the old cases, Latheefa mentioned that there were definitely more than 10.
She also mentioned getting information and calls to reopen cases in Sarawak and on the death of Teoh Beng Hock.
Yesterday, Latheefa was quoted by Bernama as saying that MACC would reopen old cold case files involving public interests.
She said she had given instruction for the cases to be reviewed and MACC had also received several complaints involving these cases. - Mkini
