Penang takes extra measures to combat spread of Covid-19

CORONAVIRUS | Local employers will be asked to submit a list of their foreign workers and expatriates to the state government as a measure to combat the spread of Covid-19, said a Penang executive councillor.

Phee Boon Poh, who oversees the environment and caring society portfolio, said the list includes their residential address and details of their recent cross–border travels to areas where they could most likely be affected by the virus.

"This is part of the precaution strategy of the state so that Penang can stay clear of possible infections. 

“We need to be united over this now, most importantly, everyone needs to be responsible for their personal hygiene so we can overcome out the virus,” he said when met at his office in Komtar yesterday.

"Malaysians who had travelled abroad or those who had come into close contacts with persons under investigations (PUI), report to the authorities; be it the customs, immigration, police or public health inspectors," said Phee, who is also in-charge of welfare.

Globally the death toll is now at 2,005, with 2,000 deaths occurring in mainland China and one each in Philippines, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan and France. 

It is reported that there are 75,122 confirmed cases with 12,624 patients having recovered.

Meanwhile, the state plans to distribute about 100,000 surgical masks to various sectors, especially those in the frontline in the fight against Covid-19.

Although there are no deaths in Malaysia, Penang continues to take various preventive measures to raise awareness among its local residents and tourists.

This is in line with Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Mohamaddin Ketapi's statement that the direction and promotion of Visit Malaysia Year (VM2020) will be modified according to the situation of the country following the Covid-19 infection. 

Penang Green Council has initiated a 30-second video clip on the virus and precautions to take and symptoms, and this will be broadcasted in hotels, cinemas and public places from 10am until 10pm.

"We know the weather is hot and the heat is rising. The public should only take ice cubes which are made with boiled water, as a precaution against the spread of influenza," Phee cautioned.
