PM calls for prudent spending, plug leakages to strengthen nation's financial position

PUTRAJAYA: The Prime Minister has directed the government machinery to effectively implement initiatives of Budget 2020 and the recently-unveiled economic stimulus package to benefit the rakyat.
Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin (pic) also wants the Finance Ministry to ensure the stimulus package be carried out smoothly and immediately, and to monitor its effects on the economy.
The Prime Minister held a meeting with Finance Ministry officials for a briefing on the country's current economic situation, fiscal position, national debt as well as on measures laid out under the economic stimulus package.
The package valued at RM20bil was launched on Feb 27 to help cushion the effects of the Covid-19 outbreak.
"The Prime Minister has stressed on the importance of implementing prudent spending and reducing leakages so that the country's financial position is stronger.
"He also wants attention to be given on the government's debts and liabilities and for all projects to be scrutinised so that it will not burden the government's financial commitment," said the Prime Minister's Office in a statement on Tuesday (March 3).
The PMO also said that Muhyiddin was of the opinion that annual budget allocation must bring big returns to economic growth and be able to generate income for the people and the country.
"Therefore, the Prime Minister wants government programmes and projects to be carried out effectively to bring greater benefit to the country and safeguard the wellbeing of the people," said the statement.
Discussions between Muhyiddin and Finance Ministry's officials also revolved around measures that can be taken to strengthen domestic economic activities that can push the country further in terms of competitiveness.
Present at the meeting held at the Prime Minister's Office were Chief Secretary to the Government Datuk Seri Mohd Zuki Ali, Treasury secretary-general Tan Sri Ahmad Badri Mohd Zahir and senior ministry officials. - Star
