We need to strike a fine balance between vigilance and the need to maintain some normalcy in our lives during this time when we are asked to socially distance ourselves from others and we are placed under mandatory lockdown to prevent the further spread of Covid-19.
The school shutdown and the current lockdown are a good chance for us to make better relationship and bonding with our children and teenagers. This is the perfect time to make our kids feel loved and secure and also to show them that they are very important to us.
Our children have a right to truthful information about what is going on in our world today and we have the added responsibility to keep them safe from distress and anxiety.
The World Health Organization ( WHO ) has recommended a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity per week or a combination of both for us to stay active and healthy. WHO also has tips on how to achieve this with no equipment and within a limited space. There is an abundance of tools online that are accessible for free which are targeted at encouraging people of all ages and abilities to stay active while remaining indoors.
We are duty bound to respect and honor all the orders and the instructions of our Authorities during this trying times. We must stay indoor always. However we are allowed to go outdoors strictly to buy food and necessities. But please try to limit such trips to once a week. When you are outdoors, please abide by the social distancing rules and wear a face mask. Always travel outdoors alone and do NOT drag your kids along with you.
We are being bombarded with too much news during this period of the lockdown. Unfortunately, not all the news we see, hear or read are credible. We must learn to differentiate news that is true from false. Our responsibility is to make sure that we do NOT disseminate, distribute or forward fake news.
It is very natural to feel stressed, anxious, fearful and lonely at this time. We should avoid news that will make us feel depressed. We should stay connected to our family and friends through the social media. Chat with them regularly on matters other than those related to the pandemic. Remember, social distancing does NOT mean emotional distancing. So feel free to let out your inner feelings.
