Bersatu supreme council member A Kadir Jasin said it would not come as a surprise if Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin returns to Umno.
On the same note, the veteran newsman claimed Muhyiddin, who is the president of the fractured Bersatu, could once again receive the short end of the stick.
Kadir speculated that Muhyiddin could be mulling returning to Umno due to the uncertainty surrounding Bersatu's future.
"We must remember, Muhyiddin did not leave Umno. He was sacked by (former president) Najib (Abdul Razak) whereas (Bersatu chairperson) Dr Mahathir Mohamad left Umno voluntarily.
"So it is not impossible or shocking if Muhyiddin returns to Umno," he added in a blog post last night.
Muhyddin was sacked from Umno in 2016 for rebelling against Najib, who was the prime minister at the time, over the 1MDB scandal.
In February this year, Muhyiddin took Bersatu out of Pakatan Harapan to form the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition with Umno, BN, PAS and others to seize control of the federal government.
Bersatu, however, is split between those aligned to Muhyiddin and Mahathir. The latter's faction has remained supportive of Harapan.
Meanwhile, Kadir (photo) claimed that Umno is using PN to satiate its desire for power and as a launchpad for its Muafakat Nasional pact with PAS.
He said Umno and PAS could spell trouble for the prime minister
"They can trigger a crisis, such as a vote of no confidence against Muhyiddin so that the PN government falls, force the dissolution of Parliament and have a snap general election.
"If Umno can so easily get rid of Muhyiddin in 2016, when he was the (former) deputy prime minister and Umno deputy president, we should not be surprised or shocked if he is taken for a ride (dipermainkan) by Umno," he added.
Kadir urged Bersatu members who remain true to their struggle to realise that Muhyiddin's political ploys do not benefit the party.
Political pundits have predicted that the PN coalition could run into trouble with regard to electoral seats with Bersatu, Umno and PAS eyeing the same constituencies. It is unlikely that Umno would step aside for Bersatu in a general election.
Mahathir, on the other hand, predicted this would sound the death knell for Bersatu.
The battle for control over Bersatu between the two factions is manifesting in the party elections with Mahathir's son Mukhriz challenging Muhyiddin for the top post.
Mahathir has won the chairperson post - the most powerful position in Bersatu - uncontested, but there are disputes over his current control over the office. - Mkini
