Police block over 3,000 vehicles attempting to 'balik kampung'

Malaysiakini
More than 3,000 vehicles have attempted to cross state borders to balik kampung (return to their hometowns) and were forced to turn back, said Senior Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
"Yesterday, a total of 3,212 vehicles attempted to cross borders on the excuse of balik kampung," he told a press conference in Putrajaya today.
Ismail said there appears to be a surge of vehicles trying to sneak home through interstate travel.
"If we thought 1,000 (vehicles attempting to cross borders days before) was high, we are now seeing more than 3,000, which means the number of people (attempting to sneak home) is still very high," he said.
He said the police will only allow vehicles with authorisation and valid excuses, including the death of family members, to make interstate trips.
Police have set 216 roadblocks nationwide and conducted checks on 318,082 vehicles, Ismail said.
Besides that, security personnel also checked 77,537 premises yesterday to ensure operators were observing the standard operating procedure (SOP) of the conditional movement control order (MCO), he said.
This included 4,883 supermarkets, 4,572 restaurants, 697 hawkers, 1,260 factories and 3,878 banks.
"Police have detained 44 individuals for allegedly violating the SOP with 40 of them remanded and four allowed bail."
On top of that, compound notices were issued against 51 individuals for SOP violations, he said.
"Once again, I am reminding everyone to observe the conditional MCO," he stressed.
