KOTA KINABALU: Hari Raya Aidilfitri turned tragic for a family in southwestern Beaufort when a mother and her four grownup sons died in a fire that razed their house.
The woman identified as Aishah Jumat, 58, perished in the fire that also took the lives of her sons Dzulkarnain Othman, 34, Dzulnisham, 27, Rozaini, 26 and Rosdi, 24.
Two other sons aged 24 and 29 also suffered severe burns in the fire that destroyed their wooden house in Membakut about 100km from here.
The two are being treated at the Beaufort hospital.
The woman's husband Othman Ali, 64, and a daughter-in-law managed to escape unhurt in the fire on Sunday (May 24).
Sabah Fire and Rescue Department director Kamarulzaman Malik Abdullah said they received a distress call at 2.45am.
He said firemen from Kuala Penyu rushed to the scene and took nearly two hours to bring the fire under control by 5am.
"At that point, the house was completely destroyed," he said.
He said that they found the charred remains of the five bodies in the burned down house.
He said that the bodies were handed over to police for further investigation.
Firemen are still ascertaining the cause of the fire, he said. - Star
