Govt: No intention of introducing law for tackling racial discrimination

KUALA LUMPUR: The government has no intention to introduce a new law to tackle racial discrimination, says National Unity Minister Datuk Halimah Sadique.
She was responding to Lim Lip Eng (PH-Segambut), who asked whether the government had intentions to introduce a specific act to address racial and religious discrimination.
“The government has no intention to create a new law as proposed by Kepong. The government today has adequate laws to preserve racial and religious harmony, ” she said in a Parliamentary written reply dated Monday (Aug 10).
She said that those who issue any form of statements that undermine harmony and unity can be investigated and charged under subsection 4(1) of the Sedition Act and section 504,505, and 506 of the Penal Code.
Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for sharing menacing and offensive content can also be used against those who stoke racial flames, she added.
