BUTTERWORTH: Lim Guan Eng’s wife Betty Chew gave a teary speech today following her court appearance in which she was charged with money laundering, calling the accusations frivolous and insisting that they were aimed at her husband.
Adding that she had been a lawyer for 26 years, she said she had always been a law-abiding citizen and careful not to break the law.
“Where did I go wrong?” she said in a press conference at Lim’s parliamentary office here. “Why the three money laundering charges against me?
“I am not a tai ka jie (Cantonese for big sister) or kak long of a community,” she added. “Is it because I am Guan Eng’s wife that I have to face this? Is it because you want to break my relationship with Guan Eng, then you will let me go?”
Accompanied by Lim, who also teared up as he consoled her, Chew said she would stand by her husband throughout the ordeal.
“My husband is innocent,” she said. “With his presence, I am confident.
“Adversity will make us stronger. Today, you are doing this to us. God is watching you, and I hope you get what you are doing to us now.”
Chew was earlier charged with laundering RM372,009 in illegal proceeds received as gratification in relation to a project for foreign workers’ dorms worth RM11.6 million.
Lim was charged with abuse of power while Chew’s business associate, Phang Li Koon, was accused of abetting Lim.
At the same press conference, Lim maintained that the charges against him were a form of political vengeance. - FMT
