204 hotels, travel agencies shuttered due to pandemic, restriction orders

PARLIAMENT | A total of 204 tourism-related entities have closed down nationwide between March and October due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and the movement restriction orders.

According to Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Nancy Shukri, 109 of them were hotels, resorts, motels, homestays and chalets whereas 95 were travel agencies and those dealing with tourism activities.

Responding to Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub (BN-Machang), she told the Dewan Rakyat today that some of these entities were shut due to winding-up orders by the court and others via voluntary winding-up.

On the same note, Bernama reported that the minister said 135 new licences were approved for tourism-related businesses during the same period.

Nancy pointed out that the ministry has always helped the tourism industry through various initiatives.

“The ministry provides financing facilities, such as the Tourism Structure Fund through Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Bhd and the Tourism Special Fund managed by SME Bank,” she was quoted as saying.

Currently, Nancy said, the government still has an unused allocation of RM30 and RM200 million provided for in Budget 2021.

“The National Security Council has also approved a travel bubble for green zone areas, and it is one of the efforts for us to revive the tourism economy,” she added. - Mkini
