PETALING JAYA: An Amanah Youth branch leader claimed in a tweet, later deleted, that opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim had purportedly promised to resign if he failed to topple the Perikatan Nasional government in 7 days.
PKR communications chief Fahmi Fadzil later said the supposed statement by Anwar was fake.
However, Sheikh Khuzaifah Bawazeer, head of Amanah Youth’s Bukit Bintang branch, said Anwar had “once again thrown his friends under the bus” by not backing a bloc vote to halt a second reading of the federal budget in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday.
The claim about the promise to resign was among several points that Sheikh Khuzaifah raised about the opposition’s failure to halt the second reading.
He contradicted Anwar’s remarks earlier today explaining that the opposition allowed the budget to go into the committee stage so that changes could be made.
Sheikh Khuzaifah said the budget itself was “never an issue”. Instead the vote was to be a show of force to bring down the Perikatan Nasional government, as unanimously agreed at an opposition meeting on Nov 24.
However, Anwar had suddenly told the MPs not to support a bloc vote after Mahfuz Omar of Amanah had stood up requesting for such a vote.
“Kota Raja (Mohamad Sabu) and Pulai (Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub) had already stood up but were forced to sit back down. Other Amanah MPs could not be stopped from standing.
“Kota Raja and Pulai threw a fit in the PH meeting afterwards. The opposition leader had again thrown his friends under the bus,” he added. - FMT
