MELAKA: Md Som Dol and his family in Kampung Belimbing Dalam in Durian Tunggal near Alor Gajah here are having sleepless nights due to 'banjir termenung' (stagnant water due to floods) which is taking a longer time to recede than usual.
The 63-year-old private company retiree claimed that villagers were forced to endure the problem when floods hit the village at 6pm on Friday.
"The flood water is all over my kitchen.
"This is disturbing since we do not know when the (flood) situation will improve so that we can get on with our lives," Md Som, who is staying with his wife and four children, said.
Unlike nearby villages, he said it was rare for his village to get hit by floods during monsoon season.
"The last time floods had wreaked havoc in our village was five months ago.
"At that time, the situation was not as bad. Flood waters receded immediately after the downpour stopped," he said.
Apart from Kampung Belimbing Dalam, the floods also hit nearby villages including Kampung Pulau and Panchor.
Also not spared by the fury unleashed by the heavy downpour were villagers in Kampung Busut Licin in Ayer Molek.
Heavy and continuous rain triggered floods at the village and forced villagers to be evacuated to SK Ayer Molek, which has been turned into a flood evacuation centre.
Another villager Ramlan Mansor said the flood, which inundated his village since Friday morning had damaged his furniture and other equipment inside his house.
"It is the worst flood in 14 years. The flood reached knee-high level inside our house.
"Having that said, I am thankful that my wife and five children are safe," he said.
Ramlan said there were 10 families from the same village who were relocated to the flood evacuation centre, including the family of Mohd Ali Abd Rahman.
Mohd Ali said he was thankful that his family members including his elder brother who is disabled were safe.
"We are also thankful to the government agencies and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) which provided assistance in the form of necessary items during our stay at the temporary relief centre," he said.
A total of 105 people from 29 families from several villagers were relocated to the same centre occupied by Mohd Ali and his family.
Bernama reported that the number of people evacuated due to floods in Melaka has dropped to 404 as at 2pm compared to 416 people reported at 12 noon today.
This was following the closure of the flood evacuation centre at Sekolah Kebangsaan Ganun, which housed 12 people from four families at 12 noon.
All 404 people are now housed in five flood evacuation centres in three districts statewide while the weather is reported to be cloudy with intermittent rain. - NST
