Five major Kelantan rivers rise, as flooding fears intensify

KOTA BARU: Signs of potential major flooding emerged today when five rivers in the state rose above their normal levels following non-stop heavy rain since last night.

According to the state Welfare Department's online flood portal, the rivers are in Gua Musang (Sungai Lebir, which has risen to 62.83 metres and Sungai Galas at 53.23m); Kuala Krai (Sungai Kelantan at 18.83m); Tanah Merah (Sungai Golok at 19.77m) and Rantau Panjang (Sungai Golok at 6.21m).

The water level assessment was made at 8am.

The portal also stated that other rivers in the state are also rising, but are still below their alert levels.

So far, there has been no report of flooding or rivers bursting their banks.

The state authority had earlier set up 159 flood front bases and 17 food storage facilities state-wide, in preparation for the monsoon season.

A total of 539 flood relief centres are ready to accommodate evacuees.

Kota Baru has the highest number of relief centres at 115, followed by Kuala Krai (105) and Pasir Mas (70). - NST
