It wasn’t us, Indah Water says on Selangor River pollution claim

IWK has lodged a police report over the pollution and authorities are now investigating the actual cause.

PETALING JAYA: Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd (IWK) has denied allegations that it is involved in the odour pollution detected in the Sungai Selangor, claiming it was caused by third party illegal waste dumping instead.

Its CEO Narendran Maniam said the company had halted effluent releases since Nov 4, after detecting illegal waste in the sewerage system.

“The sewage treatment plant (STP) affected had to contain the flow for the past few days to avoid spillage into the waterways.

“If this was not executed promptly, the illegal element that came into our plant would have created further detriment to the environment,” he said in a statement.

Narendran added that IWK had immediately informed the relevant authorities about the pollution and had carried out treatment to neutralise it.

“We have lodged a police report about this matter and it is now being investigated by the authorities as to ascertain the actual cause of the pollution.”

Previously, exco member Hee Loy Sian said Air Selangor, Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS) and other agencies had traced the source of pollution in Sungai Selangor to an IWK sewerage plant in Taman Velox, Rawang.

He said he suspected sabotage as the incident occurred 24 hours after the state had passed amendments to the LUAS enactment, which contains stiff penalties for polluters, including fines of up to RM1 million and a mandatory jail sentence.

Earlier today, Air Selangor had said the Rantau Panjang, SSP1, SSP2 and SSP3 water treatment plants were forced to stop operations in stages from noon after a solvent-like odour was detected.

The odour pollution had recorded a reading of eight TON (threshold odour number). - FMT
