Simpang Renggam MP Maszlee Malik has announced his exit from former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad's party, Pejuang.
The former education minister said he would continue his efforts for education reform through his capacity as an independent lawmaker and networking with NGOs and activists.
"I believe efforts for changes do not require power and position solely, but with passion and opportunity," he added in a statement today.
For the record, Pejuang has yet to be registered as a political party pending approval by the Registrar of Societies (ROS). Its pro-tem committee submitted the application in August.
Maszlee explained his decision was based on facts garnered through detailed observation and field research on the aspirations and needs of the people.
"I believe the rakyat have grown nauseous with the game of power and politics by the elite politikus (politicians).
"The rakyat are in need of politicians who focus on supporting and truly solving the adversities that they are currently facing," he added.
On Covid-19, he prayed for the pandemic to immediately subside and disappear.
"We haven't won, but we will win. Insyallah," he said.
Maszlee's name was not in Pejuang's statement on Budget 2021 yesterday and this raised the question of his membership status.
Following his withdrawal from Pejuang, only four MPs remain in the party, namely Mahathir who is the Langkawi MP, his son Jerlun MP Mukhriz Mahathir, Kubang Pasu MP Amiruddin Hamzah and Sri Gading MP Shahruddin Salleh.
According to Mahathir, Pejuang was formed to uphold Bersatu's original anti-corruption struggle and to continue fighting against money politics.
It came after they were ousted from their former party Bersatu, which is led by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.
Bersatu left Harapan in February to join hands with Umno, PAS, GPS and several former PKR MPs led by Azmin Ali to form the Perikatan Nasional government.
The move led to the collapse of the Harapan government, which only lasted for 22 months after being elected in the 14th general election. - Mkini
