Temple celebrations only on first day of Deepavali, EMCO zones not permitted

Hindu devotees will be allowed to celebrate at temples only on the first day of Deepavali. This is only for temples in recovery movement control order (RMCO) and conditional movement control order (CMCO) zones.

Senior Minister (Security cluster) Ismail Sabri Yaakob said temples in enhanced movement control order zones (EMCO) will not be allowed to carry out any ceremonies for the holiday.

Ismail, who was speaking during his daily live briefing, said the decision was reached following consultation with the National Unity Ministry and Hindu religious leaders.

"There will be no cross-district, intra-district, or cross-state movement permitted from CMCO and EMCO zones," added Ismail.

He said the ceremonies must be held in small groups of no more than 30 people subject to the size of the place of worship and its ability to accommodate physical distancing.

He added that that there should be sanitisation processes carried out between each prayer session.

"Prayer sessions should be held starting from 7am to noon with five sessions of 30 minutes each. This must be interspersed with sanitary operations for 30 minutes before starting a new session," said Ismail.

"Therefore there will be five prayer sessions and five sanitary sessions," he said.

"Among the required SOPs include for the temple to provide a counter at the entrance for inspection of body temperature and screening for Covid-19-related symptoms such as cough, sore throat, or shortness of breath.

"Devotees must sign in using the MySejahtera application or record their names in the attendance book," said Ismail.

He added that those suffering from chronic diseases, the elderly, and children aged 12 and below are not encouraged to attend.

"Religious sweets need to be distributed in wrapping," he added.

He said those who wish to hold festive celebrations at their residences could do so for immediate family members, not exceeding 20 people at a time.

For an area of less than 1,500 square feet, a maximum of 10 people is permitted. For 1,500 to 2,500 square feet, a maximum of 15 people is permitted.

Ismail added that family members are encouraged to wear face masks, practice physical distancing, and use hand sanitisers. - Mkini
