The Universiti Malaya Association of New Youth (Umany) wants police to investigate death, rape, and acid attack threats made against its members.
The student group said they began receiving threatening messages on Nov 18 which were accompanied by their photos.
"The content received by the Umany members includes graphic descriptions of rape and death, threats to rape Umany female members, threats to hurl acid on Umany members and their families, threats to kill Umany members and their family members, (and) personal attacks towards members using vulgar language and racist remarks.
"We are deeply concerned whether there was any data or security breach that had compromised Umany members’ personal information," they said in a statement.
A police report has been lodged with the Petaling Jaya police station.
One of the messages sent to the Umany members was a photo collage of a murdered woman with the text "You want the same fate as Kenny (sic) Ong?".
This is believed to be in reference to Canny Ong, a woman who was raped and murdered in 2003.
The threats came almost two weeks after the group published a controversial statement regarding the role of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong in national affairs.
This is after the king rejected the government's request for an emergency declaration and had advised all MPs to support Budget 2021.
Umany argued that the king “should not interfere in national affairs, must always maintain a neutral attitude and play his role within the framework permitted by the constitution”.
They withdrew their statement and apologised last week.
The association is being probed under the Sedition Act as well as the Communications and Multimedia Act. - Mkini
