You must have heard about introverts and extroverts, and how they differ from each other. Even though these basic behavioural traits are wrongly taken as personality types, they give a good insight into what a person’s preferred reaction might be while interacting with his/her surroundings. When we go one step further, we start hearing about basic personality types like alpha, beta, and gamma personalities, which are again basic personality frameworks and not personality types themselves. These can largely be considered to be predominant predilections of a person while interacting with the world around him and the people in it.
These over-complicated words and overly-hyped personality theories in their core, hold a fundamental principle that suggests that it is more probable for a person to behave in a certain way in the presence of some known or unknown elements rather than some other way. These theories - just like stereotypes - exist for a reason and for about 80 percent of the world population they are equally applicable. However, these theories do not apply to what we call Complex Personalities.
Let us be clear here. At the end of the day, every person and therefore his psyche is complex. So, when we say a person is a complex personality, it just means that he is more complicated than other personality types. If you observe closely, simple personality types behave in a manner that is more external than internal. This means their reaction to a certain stimulus depends on their environment and the people around them. They are ‘dependent’ in terms of not only their interactions with the external world but also their thought process of reaching to that reaction. If their environment is positive, they behave positively and if it is negative, they behave negatively.
People with a complex mindset are the exact opposite in that they internalize their every decision due to which many introvert traits are attached to them. The hot reading methods utilized by mentalists and body language experts, do not work on the complex ones. This is partly because of their knowledge of these concepts and hence the unconscious masking of their body language, and partly because they might be consciously trying to fool you by altering the same. The thought process and body language of a complex personality go several layers deep and hence quite possibly be a double bluff or even a triple bluff.
If you are looking for a simple definition, a complex personality is a person who forms his own opinions, questions everything, is naturally curious, is fluid in terms of his beliefs and points of views, and is not dependent on external constructs to decide how he/she might react in a particular social setting. They are confident in themselves - not overconfident - and they are continually trying to better themselves in every sphere of life, which results in an internal conflict governing their minds at all times. Consequently, they are more creative, intelligent, revolutionary, and sometimes lonelier than their counterparts.
