PETALING JAYA: Not all credit cards are the same.

Maybank has clarified that its Islamic credit cards cannot be used to purchase non-shariah compliant products like liquor.

A Maybank spokesperson told FMT they had to follow regulatory guidelines set out by Bank Negara Malaysia on this.

It said the terms for the use of its Islamic credit cards were clearly specified when they were issued to a person.

The bank suggested that those intending to buy items like liquor to apply for its conventional credit cards which can be used for any kind of purchase.

Bank Negara’s guidelines on Islamic credit cards, issued in July 2019, state that the bank must ensure Islamic credit cards are not used for non-shariah compliant transactions.

Besides purchase of liquor, these Islamic credit cards cannot be used for dating services, lotteries and in casinos.

In a post that went viral on Facebook yesterday, a Maybank Islamic Visa Infinite Ikhwan credit card-i holder described his frustration when he was unable to purchase liquor at a duty-free shop at KLIA.

“I thought my card was faulty. When I called the card centre, they asked me just one thing — whether I tried to swipe for purchase of liquor,” he said.

“I said ‘yes’ and was told Maybank is a shariah-compliant bank and so I can’t purchase liquor with my credit card. I was stunned.” - FMT
