Chinese Covid-19 vaccine trial begins with 62 Malaysian volunteers

Phase three clinical trials for the Institute of Medical Biology Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (IMBCAMS) experimental Covid-19 vaccine began in Malaysia today.

A batch of 62 volunteers will be the first to be vaccinated, the Health Ministry said on its official Facebook page.

“The first Covid-19 vaccine trial in Malaysia began today at Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital, Sungai Petani (Kedah).

“Sixty-two healthy individuals have been chosen as volunteers. The injections began today and will resume over the next few days as per schedule,” it said.

It also put out a call for more volunteers for the trial. The ministry can be contacted via WhatsApp during working hours on working days.

Health Minister Dr Adham Baba previously said that nine hospitals and 3,000 volunteers will be involved in the 13-month IMBCAMS trial.

Aside from the hospital mentioned above, the others are Sungai Buloh Hospital (Selangor), Ampang Hospital (Selangor), Sarawak General Hospital (Sarawak), Penang Hospital (Penang), Seberang Jaya Hospital (Penang), Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital (Kedah), Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (Perak) and Taiping Hospital (Perak).

The trial is sponsored by IMBCAMS, who also developed the vaccine.

The Health Ministry’s Institute of Clinical Research (ICR) is coordinating the trial.

The ministry's National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA), as well as its Medical Review and Ethics Committee, have been tasked with monitoring it.  - Mkini
