COVID-19 | The most recent iteration of the conditional movement control order (MCO) has failed to bring the Covid-19 pandemic under control, said Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.
Instead, daily new case numbers, as well as the infectivity rate (R0), has been on the rise.
So much so that the healthcare system is now breaking down and the ministry is prescribing an entirely different strategy altogether.
Speaking at a press conference this evening, Noor Hisham said he was “very concerned” about the spike in infections.
“What is for sure is that the move or strategy that we have been using from Oct 14 until now - although we have managed to avoid a spike to four million cases (as projected) we have not succeeded in bringing down case numbers.
“The R0 is still at 1.1 and is increasing to 1.2. We did not succeed in bringing it down to 0.5 (as we hoped),” he said.
The top health official thus called for a “review” of not just the present conditional MCO but also the government’s decision last month to lift the ban on interstate and interdistrict travel.
Restrictions on the number of passengers allowed per vehicle were also lifted.
Malaysia registered a record-breaking 2,593 new cases today. Active cases are now at 24,347.
The Klang Valley alone (Selangor and Kuala Lumpur) accounted for 1,230 cases - 47.4 percent of the total number of new cases.
Noor Hisham predicted that cases will only continue to rise.
“We expect that cases will rise in the next week or two, after the 2021 New Year (celebrations),” he said. - Mkini
