An Indonesian Sriwijaya Air plane with more than 50 people on board is believed to have crashed around Pulau Laki, an area that is part of a cluster of islands known as Kepulauan Seribu, located off Indonesia's capital city, Jakarta.
Local media Kompas.com quoted Kepulauan Seribu district chief Djunaedi as confirming the incident.
"Yes, (at Pulau Laki)," Djunaedi was quoted as saying.
As of around 6pm, a search and rescue team was reported to be en route to the site.
Separately, Indonesia's TV One reported that a government patrol boat had found body parts around the site where the plane was believed to have gone down.
The patrol boat's captain, Eko, said they headed towards the site following reports from local fishermen who claimed to have heard a thunder-like noise.
"We found pieces of flesh, could be bits from a human body," Eko was quoted as saying by TV One.
The aircraft initially lost contact with ground control after taking off from the Indonesian capital of Jakarta today en route to Pontianak in the West Kalimantan province on Borneo island.
Flight tracking service 'Flightradar24.com' said on its Twitter feed that Flight SJ182 "lost more than 10,000 feet of altitude in less than one minute, about four minutes after departure from Jakarta".
The aircraft is a 27-year-old Boeing 737-500, according to registration details included in the tracking data.
Sriwijaya Air said in a statement that it is still gathering more detailed information regarding the flight before it can make any further statements. - Mkini
