Reporters are frontliners too, says journalists’ union

The National Union of Journalists wants preference to be given to pressmen on active duty.

PETALING JAYA: A journalists’ union has called for all press conferences to go held online, as a means to protect reporters from Covid-19.

National Union of Journalists president Farah Marshita Abdul Patah also urged that reporters be given swift passage at roadblocks “so that they can do their jobs without any hassle”.

She also called for the cooperation of VIPs to respond to requests by journalists for comment or clarification.

NUJ said that reporters are often neglected despite being frontliners themselves.

“Our numbers are dwindling with time,” Farah said.”Please remember that reporters aren’t just reporting on Covid-19, but also other issues in politics, natural disasters, and legal proceedings as well.”

She said ensuring reporters’ safety also ensures that Malaysians can stay informed.

“We remind all those working in the media to be careful and stay safe on the job.”

It also urged reporters showing Covid-19 symptoms to get tested and undergo strict quarantine as soon as possible. - FMT
