Ministry to build Pakcik Hashim a home after Muar MP intervenes

The Rural Development Ministry has agreed to erect a prefabricated home for a senior citizen in Muar who had been living in squalor before the intervention of Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.

In a Facebook post tonight, Syed Saddiq said ministry officers had visited the decrepit home belonging to the 59-year-old known as "Pakcik Hashim" (above, left) and said the home can be built within two months.

This is on the condition that ownership of the land is sorted out beforehand.

Malaysiakini understands that the inherited land is to be shared between Hashim and his siblings.

Syed Saddiq said his Muar parliamentary office was working to get the matter resolved soon.

Hashim, who gets work disability payments of RM300 a month from the Social Welfare Department, had been living in a run-down house for the past six months.

Yesterday, Syed Saddiq opened up his home to Hashim so that he could have a place to stay and rest before being moved to a rented unit.

The lawmaker said today that Hashim had been moved to an elderly care centre (above) until he gets a permanent home.

He added that he will bear the RM1,200 per month cost for Hashim to stay at the centre but welcomes donations to help support the senior citizen.

As of today, he has already received RM10,229 in donations for Pakcik Hashim.
