Avoid repeating submissions, court tells Najib's defence team

The Court of Appeal has issued a reminder to Najib Abdul Razak’s defence team to avoid repeating the same points in the hearing of his appeal in the RM42 million SRC International case.

The three-person bench's chairperson Abdul Karim Abdul Jalil gave the advice during open-court proceedings this morning in relation to the former premier’s counsel Harvinderjit Singh’s (above) submissions in the appeal to quash Najib's conviction and sentencing over the corruption case.

The other members of the panel were Court of Appeal judges Vazeer Alam Mydin Meera and Has Zanah Mehat.

Karim told Harvinderjit to summarise the submissions as many of the points have been dealt with in previous submissions by lead defence counsel Muhammad Shafee Abdullah.

"You are repeating it again and again. It is better you use it to relate to the CBT (criminal breach of trust case against Najib).

"Rather than you bring this thing (point) to us that has been done before (by Shafee). Make it clear," Karim told Harvinderjit.

The judge also advised the lawyer to relate submissions to the defence's contention of how the High Court had erred in finding Najib guilty.

Harvinderjit then resumed his submissions as Najib looked on from the dock.

On July 28 last year, the High Court in Kuala Lumpur convicted Najib on one count of abuse of power, three counts of CBT, and three counts of money laundering in relation to RM42 million of funds from SRC.

Judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali had then sentenced Najib to 12 years in jail and a fine of RM210 million.

However, the High Court allowed Najib's defence team's application to stay the execution of the sentence pending the disposal of his appeal. - Mkini
