Covid-19: SMK Subang Utama closes after another student tests positive

PETALING JAYA: SMK Subang Utama in Subang Jaya will be closed after another student tested positive for Covid-19.

The school’s principal said the school is in contact with the district health office for advice on the next course of action.

After initially instructing only the affected class to continue home-based teaching and learning (PdPR) starting Friday (April 23), the notice to parents said on the basis of safety, all teachers and students instead will continue PdPR.

The notice said this is the school's second case and that the student is in Form Four.

“I had to make this decision because if teachers are not in school, teaching and learning cannot take place (and if) teachers are at home and students are in school, PdPR too cannot be implemented.

“Only administrative staff will be in the school.

“The school will update from time to time regarding attendance to school again, ” the notice said.

According to an Education Ministry statement on Oct 9,2020, schools with even one positive case detected must close immediately for sanitisation, even if they have yet to receive a risk analysis report from the Health Ministry.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Adham Baba said as of Wednesday (April 21), there were 53 active clusters out of almost 90 Covid-19 clusters that have cropped up since Jan 1 in the education sector.

Calls to close all schools nationwide grew after educational institutions recorded a total of 4,868 Covid-19 infections from Jan 1 to April 20 this year.

While the Education Ministry has yet to issue an official statement on school closure, Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon told a Chinese daily that schools with at least one Covid-19 case would now be ordered to close for at least two days. - Star
