Harapan adopts 'big tent' approach, but kleptos not welcomed

Pakatan Harapan will adopt a "big tent" approach to unifying Malaysians, regardless of political affiliations, and restore Parliament, signalling a thaw in PKR's cold relations with other opposition parties.

However, the coalition made it clear that some figures will not be welcomed for it to work with.

"We reiterate the need to engage and cooperate with any parties, based on the principles and agenda of reformasi for the benefit of the rakyat, without including kleptocrats," Harapan said in a statement today.

Its first "big tent" act was to organise a petition among MPs who support the reopening of Parliament, which will be submitted to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, the coalition added.

This was in view of the Agong's decree that he can convene Parliament during an emergency, upon the advice of the prime minister.

Harapan's statement was signed by PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, Amanah head Mohamad Sabu and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.

The "big tent" approach was conceived during the Harapan leaders' retreat in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan on April 8 and 9.

This retreat saw the adoption of the Port Dickson Resolution, in which the coalition nominated Anwar as its candidate for prime minister and outlined issues concerning election preparations.

The coalition also said it was open to "negotiations" and "cooperation" with any group.

Some opposition MPs who won their seats on a Harapan ticket during the 2018 election, have broken away from the coalition and either joined existing opposition parties or formed new ones.

Warisan, which was once a Harapan partner, has only maintained its ties with the coalition at the Sabah level. - Mkini
