PETALING JAYA: A couple was rescued today after a woman reportedly tried to commit suicide by jumping from the Penang Bridge, and her husband dived in to rescue her.
It is believed the incident had happened after a quarrel between the two.
Meanwhile, the couple’s young son was left alone on the bridge and waved frantically to passing motorists. Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department arrived at 4.40pm, reportedly alerted by members of the public who stopped their cars upon seeing the boy.
According to a fire department operations centre spokesman, the husband was able to swim and bring his wife to safety under the pylons, where they were found by rescuers.
The couple was taken to Batu Uban Jetty in a fishing boat, accompanied by the Marine Police Force.
The woman was then handed over to the police, with the operation officially ending at 6.18pm.
