Former education minister Maszlee Malik said to wait until the general election when asked if he would defend his Simpang Renggam parliamentary seat in Johor.
"Defend the Simpang Renggam seat? Wait for the general election," he said swiftly.
"I am in politics and my struggle is to make Malaysia a country that reads by 2030. I started this during my tenure as minister and I will continue this. My goal is to create an educated society," he said.
He was speaking to the media while attending a book festival in Kuala Lumpur today.
In the 2018 general election, Maszlee was fielded in the Simpang Renggam parliamentary constituency two months after joining Bersatu.
After his electoral win, he was appointed education minister. However, then prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad asked Maszlee to resign in January 2020 as he struggled to manage a number of divisive policies.
Then, amid a split in Bersatu, Maszlee and Mahathir were expelled from the party in May 2020.
Maszlee initially agreed to become a founding member of the yet-to-be registered Parti Pejuang Tanahair. He later decided to stay independent.
He has, however, worked closely with Pakatan Harapan on education issues. - Mkini
