PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has proposed that Malaysia should collaborate with D-8 member states to set up a Reciprocal Covid-19 Vaccine Certificate Recognition programme, following global vaccine rollouts.

In his speech at the 10th D-8 virtual summit, Muhyiddin said this would speed up the reopening of the hardest-hit economic sectors.

The D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation, also known as Developing-8, comprises Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Turkey.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has had an impact on the lives and livelihood of our people, and has triggered an alarm specifically on the issue of poverty. I take this opportunity to urge D-8 member states to work together to address this issue collectively,” he said.

Elaborating further, he said Malaysia’s main focus under its poverty eradication strategy has been on generating income and employment, expanding education and training facilities, modernising rural life and improving living conditions.

He added that Malaysia would share the country’s experience with other member states in order for there to be a joint approach in the steps forward post-Covid-19.

Meanwhile, he also said the 550 million youth population among all eight countries could be tapped into to revitalise individual economies, by empowering the youth with digital skills. - FMT
