PETALING JAYA: PAS rejected Muafakat Nasional (MN) because Umno had violated the charter agreed upon by both parties during its formation, says PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang.
The MN charter held that the two parties should accept other parties, including Bersatu and NGOs, Hadi said, according to Utusan Malaysia. However, he said this was not the reality.
“The Umno leadership only wanted the party and PAS to be in MN. This means it had strayed away from what we agreed upon,” he said.
“This is not right because we hold true to that agreement reached.”
Umno and PAS formed MN in September 2019 as an electoral understanding, with the stated main aim of uniting Malay-Muslims.
Hadi said Umno could not instruct PAS on what to do.
“Umno can’t tell PAS to be only with Umno as we had made promises to other parties. In fact, we had set a date to meet with Bersatu and other parties on this.
“PAS is open but unfortunately they (Umno leadership) wanted only PAS and Umno, so this was not possible. PAS is not under Barisan Nasional,” he said. - FMT
