KOTA KINABALU: Sabah recorded another three Covid-19 clusters involving schools today, bringing the tally to 10 school clusters since Jan 15.

State local government and housing minister Masidi Manjun said the three new clusters have also pushed the state’s daily cases in the past 24 hours to 342, which is seven more than yesterday.

He said the Jalan Kiulu cluster was triggered by a 14-year-old student at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Tun Fuad in Tuaran.

The student developed symptoms on Jan 17 and tested positive for Covid-19 following a RT-PCR test at a nearby clinic.

“Subsequent close contact screenings found 14 others infected,” he said, in his daily Covid-19 analysis report today.

“The health department is still investigating how the outbreak occurred but they believe it started from her interactions with others in her hostel.”

“The students are currently treated as Category 1 and 2 patients,” he added.

The other two clusters, Masidi said, namely Jalan Terusan in the east coast Lahad Datu district, and Puri Seberang in the interior, contributed a combined 29 cases to the daily infections today.

The Jalan Terusan cluster was triggered by a 13-year-old Form 1 student at SMK Terusan while the Puri Seberang cluster by an 18-year-old Form 5 student at SMK Keningau.

FMT has reached out to Sabah health director Dr Rose Nani Mudin for comment.

Yesterday, Masidi had warned that more Covid-19 clusters involving schools could emerge in the coming days after six such clusters were detected in the past two weeks in the state.

He issued the warning after receiving a report from the health department on close contact screenings among hostel students at the six schools. - FMT
