Cops summon PKR Youth leaders over Azam Baki protest

The police have called up several PKR Youth leaders for investigations following the group's protest outside the MACC headquarters yesterday.

According to PKR Youth chief Akmal Nasir, the protest leaders will be investigated under the Peaceful Assembly Act.

"Following the protest, the police have called on several PKR Youth leaders to be present at the Putrajaya district police headquarters tomorrow (Jan 12) to be investigated under the Peaceful Assembly Act.

"Among those called were me, PKR Youth vice-chief S.Thiban, PKR Youth secretary Syukri Razab and Batu MP P Prabakaran - who is (also) the Federal Territory PKR Youth chief.

Akmal said in a statement today that they would fully cooperate with the police, but the intimidation of whistleblowers and pressure groups needs to be stopped immediately.

"Instead, Azam Baki needs to be suspended for a thorough investigation to be carried out," he said.

A group of PKR Youth members and supporters held a peaceful protest in front of the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya yesterday, demanding its chief commissioner Azam Baki to step down.

The group of about 30 people led by Akmal and Prabakaran also demanded that the government launch an investigation against the top anti-graft officer over a recent scandal where he was implicated in the ownership of some two million shares in a public listed company.

The protest started with the group arriving in a convoy of some 20 cars from Dataran Putra, near the Prime Minister's Office, to the MACC premises before submitting a short memorandum that reads "Undur Azam Baki" (Azam Baki step down) to the commission.

In the same statement, Akmal said that PKR Youth would continue to place pressure on the government until this 'crisis of integrity' is handled seriously.

"PKR Youth will hand over the 'rakyat's memorandum' in front of the Parliament building during the Special Parliamentary Conference on Jan 20, 2022.

"Making this memorandum's submission a referendum of public concern, PKR Youth will hold consultations with activists, civil society groups, NGOs, student activists, and other pressure groups," said the Johor Bahru MP.
