More children under 12 infected with Covid-19 in Sabah

State minister Masidi Manjun says the infection statistics involving children below 12 is quite high and worrying.

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is concerned over the rising number of children under 12 infected with Covid-19 in the state.

State local government and housing minister Masidi Manjun said of the 253 new cases reported in the last 24 hours, 50 were children under 12 who are yet to be eligible for the vaccine.

This is an increase from the 31 children reported to have been infected the previous day.

“The infection statistics involving children below 12 is quite high and worrying,” he said in his Covid-19 analysis today.

“We hope parents and schools take the necessary precautions and initiatives to reduce the risk of infection among those who have yet to qualify for vaccination.”

Masidi also said he was concerned with the number of new infections today, which was an increase of 92 from yesterday.

He said the percentage of cases detected from close contact screenings today, which is 45.8%, was almost similar to the number of cases detected from random symptomatic screenings at 43.1%.

“This clearly reflects how widespread Covid-19 is in the community as well as the people neglecting to follow the SOPs.

“We hope the drastic spike in cases is not due to people celebrating the new year by turning their backs on the SOPs and advice from the health ministry,” he said.

He also warned that the number of cases would continue to rise if the people let their guard down and neglected the Covid-19 SOPs. - FMT
