KUALA LUMPUR: Police must clarify if embattled Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Azam Baki will be questioned over the shares controversy he is embroiled in, Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil said today.

He said that he, Petaling Jaya MP Maria Chin Abdullah and Simpang Renggam MP Maszlee Malik had lodge a police report against Azam earlier this month, but no updates had been provided since.

“Until today, the public do not know if the police have called Azam Baki in.

“Has he been called in for investigation? This is a question many wish to know the answer to,” he told reporters after giving a statement at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters.

Fahmi urged police to clarify if Azam would be brought in as he had allegedly violated Section 25 of the Securities Industry (Central Depositories) Act 1991.

Under Section 25 of the Act, every security account opened with a central depository must be in the name of the beneficial owner of the deposited securities or in the name of an authorised nominee.

Fahmi and Maria had their statements taken this morning regarding their presence when a memorandum against Azam was presented outside Parliament on Jan 20.

The memorandum set out eight demands, including Azam’s immediate suspension, and for a royal commission of inquiry into his shareholding.

It was submitted to Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim and Dewan Rakyat Speaker Azhar Harun by a group of PKR Youth members led by Youth chief Akmal Nasir. - FMT
