An Umno supreme council member has lamented the government's slow pace in plans to discuss a paper on flood response and disaster management improvements.
Puad Zakrashi said the Jan 12 date announced by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Special Duties) Abd Latiff Ahmad for the cabinet to discuss the proposal paper was too late.
"Why is it so late? In the current situation where the people are struggling post-flood, they still need to wait another (two) weeks?" he said when contacted today.
The ongoing floods have claimed the lives of at least 50 people, while two others are still missing.
Pakatan Harapan yesterday called for a royal commission of inquiry to investigate the floods and the government's management of the disaster.
Short of supporting Harapan's call, Puad said a special commission should be set up to investigate the floods.
This is as the special post-floods team the government has set up may be bogged down by bureaucracy, he said.
"As such, there should be a special post-flood commission that is more independent, transparent, and thorough.
"This should be done immediately and involve MPs, professionals, NGOs, and representatives of residents who were affected by the floods," he said.
He added that the commission should be given a narrow time frame to work in order to get quick results for the people's benefit. - Mkini
