'Is Bersatu in the opposition?' Anwar asks after reunion proposal

Pakatan Harapan chairperson Anwar Ibrahim today brushed off a proposal for the coalition to join forces with Bersatu again.

This was after Johor Bahru Bersatu deputy chief Razrul Anwar Rusli proposed that Bersatu get together with Harapan again for the Johor polls in the face of a resurgent Umno.

Anwar (above) reiterated Harapan's commitment to unite the opposition parties including from outside its coalition but pointed out that Bersatu did not fit the criteria.

"The matter did not arise (in the meeting). We said we are going to work with opposition parties, is Bersatu in the opposition?" he told journalists after chairing the Harapan presidential council meeting at the PKR headquarters in Petaling Jaya.

Yesterday, Razrul proposed that Bersatu join forces with Harapan along with other opposition parties such as Warisan, Pejuang and the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) under a banner called "Muafakat Rakyat Johor".

The proposal would essentially reset the Sheraton Move which saw Bersatu quitting Harapan, leading to the collapse of the Harapan-Warisan coalition government in February 2020.

Bersatu leaders who disagreed with the move went on to form Pejuang and Muda.

The proposal to conduct a reverse-Sheraton-Move came amid Bersatu's new bedfellow Umno now attempting to eliminate the splinter party.

Bersatu and a group of PKR rebels left Harapan in February 2020 to form a new Perikatan Nasional (PN)-BN-GPS-PBS federal government.

Bersatu is the anchor in PN, with PAS, Gerakan, Star, and SAPP as partners while Umno is the anchor in BN with MCA, MIC, and PBRS as partners. GPS is Sarawak-based while PBS is Sabah-based.

The new alliance also replaced Harapan in several states, including Johor.

Incumbent Johor Menteri Besar Hasni Mohammad, who is from Umno, last Saturday announced the dissolution of the Johor state assembly.

His party plans to contest against PN and Harapan in a bid to form a new Johor government on its own. - Mkini
