Johor polls: PKR to use own logo, Amanah and DAP stick with Harapan's

PKR is set to use its own logo in the Johor polls while Amanah and DAP will stick with the Pakatan Harapan banner.

The decision was made following a Harapan presidential council meeting at the PKR headquarters in Petaling Jaya, Selangor today.

"With regard to our logo, a consensus has been achieved... PKR will use PKR's logo while the rest will use Harapan's logo," said Harapan chairperson Anwar Ibrahim, who is also PKR president.

He was speaking to journalists after the meeting.

In a statement later, the Harapan presidential council said Anwar will be writing to the Election Commission to ask for the power to issue appointment letters for Harapan candidates to be transferred from him to DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng and Amanah president Mohamad Sabu.

The difference in opinion over a common logo had persisted since the Malacca polls.

During last November's Malacca polls, PKR pushed for all Harapan parties to use its logo but gave in after Amanah and DAP insisted on using their coalition banner.

PKR took a similar position in the upcoming Johor polls and it appeared the Harapan components were unable to break the impasse this time.

In the 2018 general election, the Harapan components had contested under PKR's logo as the coalition wasn't yet formally registered.

Since the coalition's formal registration in the same year, the component parties contested elections in Peninsular Malaysia under Harapan's common logo.

Seat negotiations completed

Anwar revealed that Harapan has also resolved seat negotiations among the three component parties contesting in the Johor polls.

He said further negotiations would be required for non-Harapan opposition parties.

"As far as we are concerned, Harapan has resolved all 56 seats. Then we can discuss with other opposition parties," he said.

Anwar was responding to a question on how many seats Harapan planned to concede to the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) to ensure the opposition vote was not split during the Johor polls.

Asked about Warisan not being keen on cooperating with Harapan, Anwar maintained that the door remains open.

"We give them space. On the part of the opposition, we want a united opposition to encourage cooperation," he said.

On Harapan's Johor menteri besar candidate, Anwar did not disclose any, stating that the seat negotiations were only just completed.

In a joint Harapan statement later, the presidential council thanked their Johor leadership for completing the seat negotiations at the coalition level.

The negotiators were PKR's Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh, Jimmy Puah Wee Tse, Naim Jusri, and Akmal Nasir.

From DAP were Liew Chin Tong, Teo Nie Ching, Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali, and Andrew Chen Kah Eng. From Amanah were Aminolhuda Hassan, Dzulkefly Ahmad, Suhaizan Kaiat, and Abdul Hamid Jamah.

"The Harapan presidential council reiterates its position that it will continue to negotiate cooperation and seat allocation among all opposition parties including Muda.

"This will strengthen the opposition bloc in the face of the Johor polls," the statement read.

The joint statement was signed by Anwar, Mohamad, Lim, and Upko president Wilfred Madius Tangau.

They also confirmed that PKR will use its own logo while the other Harapan components will use the coalition logo in the polls.

“Although there are differences in opinion regarding PKR’s request on the use of logos, the Harapan presidential council has agreed to respect PKR’s wishes that the Harapan logo will be used while PKR will be using its own party logo for the Johor election,” they said. - Mkini
