KOTA KINABALU: Another Covid-19 school cluster was detected in Sabah, this time triggered by a 53-year-old teacher at a madrasah (Islamic religious school) in the Putatan district.

Sabah local government and housing minister Masidi Manjun said the Pandan Pandan cluster has seen at least 15 others infected.

He said the man teaching at Madrasah Darul Hadis in Kampung Pandan Pandan began developing symptoms such as coughing, flu and fever before taking a RT-PCR test on Jan 17.

“After he tested positive, contact tracing was carried out on his family, and the madrasah’s staff and students. Fifteen others were found infected,” Masidi said when contacted.

“This means 16 people have so far been infected, including the 14 new cases today.”

This is the third consecutive day a cluster involving schools was detected in Sabah. Yesterday, 73 students from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Sandakan were found infected in the Jalan Pertukangan cluster.

The day before, the Puri Ranau cluster saw seven students infected with the virus at SMK Ranau.

Masidi said these clusters had pushed the new daily cases in the state today up to 256 from 242 yesterday.

He said the Pandan Pandan, Jalan Pertukangan and Puri Ranau clusters, as well as the workplace Sungai Trayon cluster in Kinabatangan contributed a combined 86 cases of the overall infections in the last 24 hours.

“The 38 children aged below 12 found infected today is also quite high as this constitutes almost 15% of overall cases.

“This means that there are still irresponsible people in the community who have exposed their children to Covid-19,” he said.

Masidi also disclosed that 29 new patients, or 11.3% of the cases reported today, had not been vaccinated.

This shows that those who were supposed to receive the jabs have yet to obtain them or do not want to be vaccinated, he said. - FMT
