Omicron wave has begun, but KJ hopeful vaccines will put a lid on it

Covid-19 cases are expected to rise as the "Omicron wave" starts to spread in the country, warned Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.

However, he remained hopeful that vaccines will help keep the situation under control.

"The Omicron wave has started in Malaysia. Cases will go up, but God willing it will be under control with a high vaccination rate," he tweeted yesterday.

He added that the healthcare system is prepared for increased cases and that the number of serious cases is in decline.

As of Tuesday, the country has detected 601 cases of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 in total.

Of this, 90 percent or 545 cases were imported.

However, there have been 56 locally transmitted cases, 34 of which were reported in Sarawak, and 12 in Selangor.

Locally-transmitted cases were also reported in Kedah (4), Labuan (4), and Sabah (2).

The country is currently on a booster vaccine drive in an attempt increase immunity against Covid-19 in anticipation of Omicron.

There were 4,744 cases of Covid-19 reported yesterday, the highest since Dec 11 (4,626). - Mkini
