Police haul up slew of opposition lawmakers, activists over Azam protest

Police are set to question more opposition lawmakers and activists over several events highlighting MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki’s share ownership controversy.

This includes individuals from the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda), DAP, PKR, PSM and Pejuang.

As of publication time, four MPs have been summoned - Fahmi Fadzil (Lembah Pantai), Maria Chin Abdullah (Petaling Jaya), Maszlee Malik (Simpang Renggam) and Teresa Kok (Seputeh).

Three assemblypersons have also been hauled up - Lim Yi Wei (Kampung Tunku), Young Syefura Othman (Ketari) and Rajiv Rishyakaran (Bukit Gasing).

Kok, Lim, Syefura and Rajiv are set to be questioned at 3pm today at the Brickfields district police station over last Saturday’s #TangkapAzamBaki (arrest Azam Baki) demonstration.

Fahmi and Maria are being questioned this morning at the Dang Wangi district police station for receiving a memorandum from PKR Youth members outside the Parliament building on Jan 20.

Maszlee is set to be questioned tomorrow over the same Jan 20 event.

Among the demands in the memorandum was to suspend Azam from his role as MACC chief and for a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to look into the share ownership scandal.

Party activists summoned

Six Muda members have been summoned over the Jan 22 demonstration - Amira Aisya Abd Aziz, Luqman Long, Dr Thanussha Francis Xavier, Tarmizi Anuwar, Nurul Rifayah Muhammad Iqbal and Aneesa Nizam.

Last night, PSM central committee member S Arutchelvan said police officers showed up at his house to summon him for questioning, also over the demonstration.

Police have further called in three youth leaders from opposition party Pejuang over the demonstration - young women’s wing chief Nurul Ashikin Mabahwi, Negeri Sembilan young women’s wing chief Siti Fairuz Mohd Fadzil and Negeri Sembilan young women’s wing deputy chief Nurhasanah Dayana Mohd Jimy.

Intimidation, waste of resources

In response to all these investigations, the committee behind the #TangkapAzamBaki demonstration criticised the police for employing intimidation tactics.

“Almost 50 youth activists have been summoned for investigation by the police.

“The committee sees these investigations as a form of intimidation, excessiveness and a waste of police resources. What should be investigated is Azam and his 'brother’s' shares scandal instead,” it said in a statement.

Police had already performed several rounds of questioning previously.

On Monday, they questioned 12 individuals - including Pakatan Harapan youth leaders over a Jan 21 ceramah event that called for Azam’s resignation.

Police earlier investigated activist and PKR member Adam Adli before the demonstration. - Mkini
