Minister warns media of consequences over 'unethical' reports

Communications and Multimedia Minister Annuar Musa has issued a warning to the media, telling them to abide by journalism ethics and the country's laws.

He said reports that violate the laws or someone's rights could result in consequences.

"Even though the government respects the principle of media freedom, all quarters must be responsible in reporting the news.

"Reports that violate someone's rights or the law must not be done, and should be avoided because it can result in the media facing civil action or legal action under the Penal Code," he said in a statement today.

Annuar did not state what instigated the warning.

However, he claimed his ministry and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission have received a lot of complaints from various quarters regarding the media violating the law or media ethics.

On Monday, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob's office lodged a police report against three websites.

The websites had published articles claiming that Ismail Sabri had "begged" Perikatan Nasional not to withdraw their support for him.

Ismail Sabri's office said the allegations were fake news.

The reports surfaced after Bersatu and PAS warned that PN’s support for the Umno-led government was conditional.

Tensions between Umno-BN and PN have escalated after the Johor state assembly was dissolved, paving the way for snap polls.

PAS had tried to negotiate cooperation with Umno in Johor, but the latter only offered the former four out of 56 seats - which the Islamist party considered a snub. - Mkini
