Health Ministry changes Covid-19 death reporting format

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry has changed the way it reports Covid-19 deaths.

From March 1 onwards, daily numbers will reflect the number of death reports received in the past 72 hours.

Previously, Covid-19 deaths only showed up in the ministry’s data after they had been registered with the state health department, a process that could take up to several weeks.

In a broadcast press conference today, Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin hoped the new format will address the backlog caused by the death registration process.

“I hope we will have more timely death data and not deaths that happened several days or weeks ago.

“We need to change our reporting format so we have a better indication of what is happening right now,” he said.

With the new format, Khairy said the daily death numbers may rise but assured this should not pose any alarm.

For example, he said of the 115 deaths reported yesterday (March 2), 62 of them happened in the past 72 hours.

The other 53 deaths happened more than three days ago. - Mkini
