The Health Ministry has confirmed that a Malaysian tested positive for monkeypox in Singapore, and it has managed to identify 14 casual contacts along with one close contact.
Its minister Khairy Jamaluddin said the man resides in Singapore, but had been in Johor Bahru on June 11 and 12.
The 45-year-old had also gone to Penang on June 17 for a holiday with his family and friends, where they stayed until June 20.
"The case had developed symptoms of skin lesions on June 30, before testing positive for monkeypox on July 6.
"When he went to Penang, the case did not show any symptoms. The symptoms only started when he returned to Johor Bahru on July 2 and 3.
"Following a notification from the Singapore Health Ministry, our ministry carried out an investigation where the case voluntarily provided us with information on those he had contact with," Khairy told a press conference today.
According to the minister, the 14 casual contacts were in Malaysia, while the only person who had close contact with him was the one who returned with the case to Singapore.
The close contact has since been placed under quarantine by the Singapore health authority.
"The 14 are found to be of low risk, as they have not shown any symptoms so far. We have told the casual contacts to self-monitor and to go to a Health Ministry facility as soon as possible if they develop any monkeypox symptoms,” he added.
Authorities have yet to identify the source of infection, including whether the case caught it in Singapore or while he was in Malaysia.
However, Khairy said, so far Malaysia has not reported any positive monkeypox infections in the country. - Mkini
