PETALING JAYA: PAS non-Muslim supporters’ wing has been given one parliamentary and three state seats to contest in the general election (GE15).
This was way below the three parliamentary and 13 state seats it had requested earlier.
The wing’s chief, N Balasubramaniam, said that its candidates were contesting in the Bukit Mertajam parliamentary constituency and three state seats in Perak — Jelapang, Sungkai and Pasir Bedamar.
He said the wing accepted the decision in the spirit of camaraderie and was being realistic about its chances.
“We understand the party’s constraints, especially with the demands from its Perikatan Nasional coalition partners. Bersatu and Gerakan also have many non-Muslim candidates.
“So, we accepted the decision wholeheartedly and will continue to campaign for PAS in GE15,” he told FMT.
He said the wing did not demand for seats but only requested for certain seats.
Balasubramaniam said since GE15 had turned out to be an election like no other with the demand for seats from all reaching a record high, the wing decided to accept the seats offered and work on them despite them being “extremely tough seats”.
Their candidate in Bukit Mertajam is Koh Tien Yew, who will face Steven Sim (PH-DAP) and Tan Yang Pang (BN-MCA).
In the Perak state seat of Sungkai, its candidate, G Thilak Raj, will face A Sivanesan (PH-DAP), Mahhadee Ramlee (independent) and V Elango (BN-MIC).
In Jelapang, its candidate S Navinten will take on Hamidah Muhamad (BN-Makkal Sakthi) and Cheah Pou Hian (PH-DAP). Cheah had won the seat in GE14.
In Pasir Bedamar, S Surianarayanan will face Woo Kah Leong (PH-DAP) and Kong Sun Chin (BN-MCA).
Balasubramaniam said PAS had shown its sincerity by offering a senator’s post to the wing two years ago.
He hoped more senators would be appointed from the wing later. Balasubramaniam took up the post in 2020. - FMT
