Companies to be held accountable for personal data security

The proposed amendment to the Personal Data Protection Act will also see it cover more industries.

KUALA LUMPUR: The government is seeking to amend the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) 2010 to make companies accountable for data in their possession, says communications and digital minister Fahmi Fadzil.

Speaking to reporters after an event, he said the amendments will also see the Act covering more industries.

Recently, a senate committee proposed the establishment of guidelines for the collection, processing and handling of consumer data as part of efforts to prevent people from falling prey to scams.

The Auditor-General’s Report for 2021 sparked concerns over data privacy when it revealed that personal information of three million vaccine recipients was taken from the MySejahtera database.

The data breach occurred between Oct 28 and Oct 31, 2021.

Meanwhile, Fahmi also said there have been discussions to merge the National Cyber Security Agency Malaysia and CyberSecurity Malaysia to form a new commission to combat cyber crimes.

The commission will be called the National Cybersecurity Commission, he said.

“We are still in the process (of making plans for the merger) and we have to bring the legislation to Parliament (for it to happen),” he said. - FMT
