PAS man withdraws defamation appeal against Amanah veep

Former PAS ulama council member Dusuki Rani (left) accused Amanah vice-president Mujahid Yusof Rawa of defaming him in a tweet in 2020.

PETALING JAYA: A former PAS ulama council member has withdrawn his appeal against a High Court ruling on a defamation suit he filed against Amanah vice-president Mujahid Yusof Rawa.

In a Facebook post, Mujahid, a former religious affairs minister, said his lawyer informed him that Dusuki Rani had withdrawn the appeal and was ordered to pay costs of RM5,000.

Last year, the Shah Alam sessions court dismissed Dusuki’s defamation suit against Mujahid for comments he made on Twitter in 2020.

In his tweet, Mujahid had accused Dusuki of telling “lies and slander” for claiming that Tabung Haji assets had been sold to non-Muslims.

The sessions court ruled that Mujahid’s posting was not slanderous as evidence given during the trial proved that Tabung Haji assets were not sold to non-Muslims. It ordered Dusuki to pay RM11,000 in costs to Mujahid.

Dusuki appealed against the decision in the High Court but lost and was ordered to pay RM7,000 in costs.

“Dusuki’s decision to withdraw his appeal is proof that he concedes that Tabung Haji’s assets were not sold to non-Muslims,” Mujahid said.

He said the sessions court had confirmed that Tabung Haji assets were not sold to non-Muslims as alleged, and that his tweet refuting Dusuki’s claim was justified.

“I am grateful that my name has been cleared and I would like to thank my lawyer, Noorazmir Zakaria from Akram Hizri Azad & Azmir.

“I hope this is the end of the false allegations surrounding the issue,” he said. - FMT
