A pro-Pakatan Harapan association has mooted the establishment of an Indian community transformation unit in Selangor to convince Indian voters to return their support to the coalition.
The Selangor Indian Executives Association (Peis) wants it to be similar to the federal-level Malaysian Indian Community Transformation Unit (Mitra) established by former premier Najib Abdul Razak.
"It is an undeniable fact that Indian support for Harapan deteriorated in the state elections, due to various factors. This cost Harapan many seats, including Gombak Setia, Taman Medan, Bukit Melawati, Semenyih, Ijok, and Hulu Kelang.
"Although the previous state (Selangor) administration had provided various initiatives for its people, there were a few 'faults' that made the aid unable to reach its recipients, especially the Indians," Peis chairperson Dr Sathia Prakash Nadarajan told Malaysiakini today.
Therefore, the establishment of a transformation unit aimed to improve the socio-economic status of Indians in Selangor would help return the community's support for Harapan, he added.
The PKR deputy secretary-general also suggested Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari personally lead the proposed unit.
"Let Selangor be the 'frontline state' for Harapan to win back Indian support.
"Selangor is a high-income state, so Peis believes there would not be any issues in establishing such a unit and allocating funds for it," he said.
Peis is an organisation comprising Selangor PKR division chiefs of Indian descent. Amirudin is its patron.
It is worth noting that Indians lead nine out of 22 PKR divisions in the state. - Mkini
