SELAYANG: The sessions court here has set Jan 18 to Feb 23 for the sedition trial of Kedah menteri besar Sanusi Nor over statements he allegedly made against royalty.

Judge Nor Rajiah Mat Zin set the dates after receiving the agreement of the prosecution and defence in proceedings today.

“The two charges will be tried together in this court, with 12 days for the trial,” she said.

Previously, judge Osmal Affendi Shalleh, who heard one of the charges, allowed the prosecution’s application to have Sanusi’s case heard by Nor Rajiah.

According to the amended charge sheet read today, the Perikatan Nasional election director faces two charges under Section 4(1)(b) of the Sedition Act 1948, which provides a fine of up to RM5,000, or a jail term not exceeding three years, or both, if found guilty.

He is alleged to have committed the offences at Simpang Empat in Taman Selayang Mutiara, Gombak, Selangor, on July 11.

The prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutors Masri Daud, Abdul Malik Ayob, Nor Azizah Aling and Nadia Izhar.

Sanusi was represented by Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud and Wan Rohimi Wan Daud, among others.

The prosecution has confirmed that it will call at least 10 witnesses during the 12-day trial. - FMT
