Govt studying flexi-week plantation jobs to attract local youths

PARLIAMENT | The Human Resources Ministry is mulling to introduce flexi-week plantation jobs to attract the younger generation, according to Deputy Minister Mustapha Sakmud.

He said the country had been facing difficulties in getting local workers to take up 3D (dirty, dangerous and difficult) jobs, especially in the plantation sector as younger generations are less interested in that sector.

This, Mustapha said, had led to the sector's high dependency on foreign workforce.

"There were several suggestions (on how to address the problem). For one, it was suggested that we introduce a syllabus so plantation jobs can be certified like SKM (Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia or Malaysian Skills Certificate),” he told the Dewan Rakyat today.

"There was also a suggestion that we introduce flexi hours or flexi week jobs to the younger generation.

"It might be boring for them if they have to work full time at plantations. So, it was suggested that we implement the method similar to the oil and gas sector where workers only go to work for two weeks or so,” he said.

Mustapha was answering a question posed by Ismail Abd Muttalib (BN-Maran), who wanted to know why there was a lack of interest among Malaysians to work in plantations and what is the government doing about it.

According to Ismail, the government had provided many facilities and initiatives, encouraging locals to explore the 3D sector but have been unsuccessful.

Adding further, the deputy minister said the Human Resources Ministry and several others are studying proposals to better gauge the interest of local youths. - Mkini
